Evaluation Task 7

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

Looking back at my preliminary task I now understand how to construct a media product, in my case this is a film opening sequence called "Detrimental".    The prelim task demanded that I understood the basics of shot choice and selection especially involving the following the use of a shot-reverse-shot, match on action and the 180 degree rule. The 180 degree rule is a filming guideline which allows the audience a greater sense of location in the scene in terms of what may be off-screen in some shots, for example in shot reverse shots.
Using these basic techniques from an in-camera exercise task I edited together the shots and this helped me understand the need for continuity using editing software.  This provided me with the essential knowledge and understanding of how my thriller opening sequence could be constructed and from the early days of my pre-planning I produced a Storyboard which reflected this.

In order to execute the film concept I had to learn how to use a digital film, a Sony NX5 camera.

I edited using the software Adobe Premiere Pro.  As a result I was able to match on action my own shots  in the editing process.
As a consequence I understand that this creates the impression of a sense of continuity - the action carrying through creates a 'visual bridge' which draws the viewer's attention away from slight cutting or continuity issues.

The effect of this was to provide continuity in the visual images.  This provided a foundation for me toad the necessary diegetic and non-diegetic sounds to create a soundtrack for the opening sequence and add titles. Overall what I have learned from this process is how to successfully make a film and understand the need for capturing the correct shot selection and this enabled me to produce an edited final product. To my mind, preliminary task was very useful as it allows me to understand more thoroughly the filming and editing process in  order to put into practice gained skills and information during our opening sequence. Furthermore, I have learnt a lot about demonstration continuity through 3 editing technique:
  • match on action (This editing technique for continuity editing in which one shot cuts to another shot portraying the action of the subject in the first shot. As a consequence I understand that this creates the impression of a sense of continuity - the action carrying through creates a 'visual bridge' which draws the viewer's attention away from slight cutting or continuity issues.)

  • the use of a shot reverse shot (During the editing process of preliminary exercise, I have understood that shot reverse shot portrays a continuous sense during conversations or simply when characters looking at each other or object.)
  • the 180 degree rule (The 180 degree rule is a filming guideline which allows the audience a greater sense of location in the scene in terms of what may be off-screen in some shots, for example in shot reverse shots.)

  1. This is very good Liza. In order to help present these points in your evaluation task. Screen grab some still images from your own film sequence.
