Evaluation Task 1

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media  products?

I learnt a lot of about conventions of thriller films and did a lot of research into this. This is a basic summary of what I have found about conventions of thriller films. There are very basic common features that can be seen within all the thrillers.

Our group realised that certain aspects of our opening sequence would need to be similar to other established thrillers to be able to target our audience we were intended to. In order to do this we had looked at other detectives thrillers. For example, "Sherlock Holmes". So we want to follow these conventions in order to attract more people.

However we still wanted to challenge the forms and conventions in order to convey a strong message behind the opening sequence. This would allow our opening sequence to be more recognisable and unique.

From our research we have concluded that the majority of thrillers have a lot loud sounds such screams and cries. It is obvious because usually the plot of detective thrillers are based murders abd killing people. However, our opening sequence does not such amount of loud sounds. Moreover, it consists of different sounds which are quite pleasant to here for our target audience. Therefore, our opening sequence challenges real media products as it does not have stereotypical sounds.

The positioning of our characters was like that of any film keeping our main and most important character in the middle of the frame so the would not be cutt off from the audience. The movement of our characters suggested very formal and authoritative giving the audience look at our main character . Therefore, we followed the basic conventions of thriller films when dealing with actor's positioning and movement.

Overall, the conventions we have used will appeal to the audience and engage them as in terms of thriller films our target audience look for. However, we did it a bit unconventional at times in order to make it more our opening sequence more unique and new for watching it.

  1. The shadow text on the blog makes this very difficult to read - can you please remove this. The address of the quesion set is good - but I feel that you need to make a wider range of points regaring the use of conventions - for example what reserach did you do - see you R & P on your blog? What were the conventions of SHerlock that you followed. You need to make reference to the thriller genre in order to fully address the question set - which is about what the audience would expect to see? What was unconventional at times? Provide examples.
