Analysis of two different opening
sequences
“Hachi: A Dog’s Story” (Drama film)
Mama (horror
film)
The opening sequence starts from the scene
of a rescue party. A man (Lucas) found girls (Victoria and Lilly), but in a feral state after years of isolation. In the next episodes
Victoria and Lilly arrived into a clinic-owned house and grant Dreyfuss for
research purposes. Victoria keeps making cryptic references to an unseen "Mama"
and Lilly sleeps under the bed, gnaws on fruit, twigs and the occasional bug,
and screams whenever anyone tries to touch her, the girls hardly seem ready for
ice cream, pajamas and bedtime stories, but Jeffrey is determined to give them
a normal life. Afterwards, audience can see the ghostly Mama, who apparently
has been alternately caring for and terrorizing the girls all these years.
There are some episodes are really scary and music makes atmosphere of terror much
more realistic. In addition to that, the acting is also superb. Some elements of ‘Mama’ are
reminiscent of Japanese horror films. The director Andy Muschietti made the
film in dark tones to create mind-bending and at the same time scary effect on
the audience. What is more, audience can feel an increase of tension during the
film due to the arduous music and camera work, which was steady and
the dolly shots were smooth and suspenseful.
All in all, Mama is a terrifying horror
movie with a beautiful story, excellent playing and wonderful camera work.
