Preliminary Exercise
To demonstrate knowledge of editing techniques
Continuity task involving filming and editing a character opening a door, crossing a room and sitting down in a chair opposite another character, with whom she/he then exchanges a couple of lines of dialogue. This task should demonstrate match on action, shot/reverse and the 180-degree rule.
We were splited on several groups to film a basic, storyboard scene which must be shot in at least five different shots. Wide firs, then one set of over the shoulder and close ups and then the reverse of these two shots. After they have completed the basic shoot, we are then free to film any additional shots that might like to have to help make our sequence more interesting.
We learnt:
Also, we followed 180 degree 'rule' - this convection helps to maintain continuity by ensuring that the action within a sequence takes place in front of an imaginary 180 degree line. If the line is crossed the change in perspective can be disorientating and confusing for the audience. In
this example, the two characters appear to have swapped places when
the 180 degree line is crossed.

We learnt:
- How to use camera ( we were using camera Sony NX5 )
- How to use tripod ( we were using to it to keep camera steady )
- How to shot from different angles
Actors were at their standard position (we use adhesive to show where actors should be) and we made several shots as: wide shot, close up, over shoulder shot. I worked with Ethen and Lucy (they were actors), Romany and Philip. It was very interesting and useful to shot preliminary exercise.
